Secondary Forum Presentation 2014

These presentations were used to guide discussions at the Fall 2014 and Winter 2016 Secondary Forum sponsored by the DE-PBS Project.
Top 10 Ideas for Rebooting Resource This resource provides PBS teams with ideas and helpful websites and webinar about how to reinvigorate PBS at the secondary level.
How Do You Include Students in Your PBS Initiative This half page sheet encourages professionals to think about how they include students on their team, in the PBS decision making process, and how they solicit their feedback.
Get to Know Your Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Data This document allows professionals to utilize their Delaware School Climate Survey data to help understand how people perceive the use of SEL techniques in their school and how students and their parents see student engagement in the school. This information can be used for baseline data for goal-setting.
Bullying Prevention Worksheet This document allows professionals to utilize their Delaware School Climate Survey data for their specific schools in order to determine what and where their bullying prevention priorities are. It also details four steps that could help your school to create or bolster a bullying prevention and response system.
Action Plan This chart will help professionals to plan activities for their school regarding bullying, major vs. minor offenses, social-emotional learning, and your SW-PBS program in general. Included in this document is space to record the activity, who is or who will be responsible, notes on the timeline, and what supports are needed, if any.
Major Versus Minor Grid This document provides an example from a high school to help schools differentiate between major and minor offenses for office referrals.  Examples are provided for various high school offenses, and a chart is also provided with examples of how to reinforce positive behavior.
Office Referral Definitions This document lists several minor problem behaviors, major problem behaviors, locations within the school, possible motivations, others involved, and administrative decisions, and defines each in a chart.
De-Escalation Strategies This document defines verbal de-escalation as a targeted intervention for use with students who are at risk for aggression. It defines several terms with which to be familiar, includes a case study, goes over discussion questions, and reviews frequently asked questions.
How to Calm an Agitated Student All educators should know the basics of how to de-escalate the agitated student. This checklist is adapted for use by schools from research on best practices in calming individuals in medical or psychiatric settings. The strategies are indented to be used in a flexible manner to increase the odds that an educator can respond efficiently and effectively to students who present with a wide range of emotional issues.
The Common View vs the Trauma-Informed View in Schools  This document can be used to help determine to what extent a particular school policy, protocol, procedure or document is or is not trauma-informed. The contrasting views are designed to draw attention to language, both verbal and non-verbal, that does not support a trauma-sensitive school environment and may trigger students with trauma histories.
Connections Surveying with Teachers This document outlines two SW activities that could help to schools to proactively identify students who may benefit from Tier 2 and 3 interventions. One activity can be completed at a staff meeting; the other is used a surveying tool.
Growth Mindset-Related Interventions Research and Outcomes This document is an excerpt from Carol Dweck and associates’ white paper Academic Tenacity (available at https://web.stanford.edu/~gwalton/home/Welcome_files/DweckWaltonCohen_2014.pdf) This figure lists interventions related to developing students’ growth mindset that have been found to improve academic outcomes for students.
